National Pro Bono Week Event Calendar for Maryland

The Baltimore City Bar Association, in conjunction with the Legal Aid Bureau, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, Legal Services to the Elderly & various volunteer attorneys, is sponsoring Pro Bono Day 2009, a free legal clinic, to be held from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Legal Aid Bureau, 500 E. Lexington Street, Baltimore 21202. The event is open to the public for free legal help. The Foreclosure Prevention Pro Bono Project, a partnership of the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland and Civil Justice Inc., will be bringing pro bono attorneys to a Foreclosure Solutions Workshop at Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, 9832 Piscataway Road, Clinton 20735 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The workshop is sponsored by US Congressman Steny Hoyer. It is open to the public, but homeowners who pre-register are guaranteed a free legal consultation. In order to pre-register, please contact Congressman Hoyer’s office at housingcrisisworkshop@gmail.com. Homeowners must bring with them all paperwork related to current and former mortgages, completed pre-registration documentation, any foreclosure notices or threats and a monthly household budget. A recognition event will be hosted by Governor Martin O’Malley at the State House in Annapolis beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the 2nd floor Reception Room with a Press Conference announcing National Pro Bono Week. Gov. O’Malley will also be making a Proclamation in honor of Maryland’s volunteer attorneys. All volunteer attorneys and public interest attorneys are welcome to attend. A networking reception and recognition ceremony entitled: Celebrating Pro Bono: Lawyers & Law Students will be held from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Hall at the University of Maryland School of Law, 519 W. A Foreclosure Training for volunteer lawyers will be sponsored by the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland and Civil Justice, Inc. The training will be held at the Columbia Union Conference Room, 5427 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia 21045 from 10:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m.. The training will cover modification of Second Liens and FHA loans under the Administration’s Home Affordable Modification Program.
A second training at the same location from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. will focus on Finding Clients in a Tough Economy. To qualify for the training you must be a current volunteer with the Foreclosure Prevention Pro Bono Project and attorneys who take either or both trainings will be required to make an additional pro bono commitment to the Project. Two Domestic Violence Training seminars sponsored by the Cecil County Pro Bono Committee and the Harford County Pro Bono Committees will be held for lawyers and others in the legal profession. The first Brown Bag lunch program will take place in the Cecil County Courthouse basement, 129 E. Main Street, Elkton 21921 at noon.
